The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)

One of the most significant recent developments in environmental legislation is the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which underscores the importance of protecting forests and reducing carbon emissions linked to consumer goods.

This landmark legislation was designed to curb deforestation, forest degradation, and illegal logging associated with imported and exported goods. Effective from 30 December 2025 (with an extension for SMEs until June 2026), the regulation applies to a wide range of commodities, including:

  • Palm oil, cattle, soy, coffee, cocoa, timber, and rubber
  • Derived products like beef, chocolate, and furniture

This regulation applies to any quantity of these goods, ensuring that even small shipments comply with stringent standards.

Key requirements along the supply chain

Growing

  • Commodities must be produced legally and classified as deforestation-free
  • Geolocation data for the production area must be collected to confirm compliance

Trading & Shipping

  • Compliant goods must be kept separate from non-compliant or unknown-origin goods
  • Mixing compliant and non-compliant goods invalidates the entire shipment, making it ineligible for the EU market

Importing

  • Importers must perform due diligence before placing products on the EU market
  • A Due Diligence Statement must be submitted, with a reference number and security token reported in the customs declaration

Compliance

  • Only products meeting EUDR standards can be released for import
  • Customs authorities will authorise the release of compliant goods for entry into the EU market
