We can report that on 1 July, a significant amendment to SOLAS (the Safety of Life at Sea Convention) takes effect. The consequences of this will be far reaching throughout the global container supply chain. The amendment mandates the provision of Verified Gross Mass (VGM) of packed containers by every shipper by one of two methods and for the shipper to ensure the VGM is communicated to the carrier and the terminal by way of a signed shipping document submitted sufficiently in advance to be used in the ship’s stowage plan. Without VGM a container cannot be loaded on board.

Container weighing services

London Gateway and Southampton are offering container weighing services to shipper can determine the VGM. However, supply chain stakeholders – shippers, packers, forwarders, carriers, terminals and ultimately regulators – must all prepare thoroughly for 1 July.

In essence a safety initiative, it is worth reiterating that VGM part of an international initiative to enhance the safety culture in the supply chain, more information will be being sent out to clarify procedures but please do not hesitate to contact the office.

We wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

From Sarah and all the Team here at Grace Overseas.
