Air freight is a significant means of exporting across the globe, however, for the UK in particular, it is an essential form of transport for a substantial proportion of our exports to countries outside of the EU. In fact, figures show that nearly half of the UK’s exports to destinations outside of the EU are carried out by air freight.
A report commissioned by Airlines UK, in association with Heathrow Airport, Manchester Airports Group and the Freight Transport Association, found that UK air freight export and import contributed £181 billion to the economy in 2018, with air freight services contributing an additional £7.2 billion.
Looking into the air freight industry’s impact on the UK economy, the report goes on to explore the impact that it has on other industries, who are reliant on this method of transport to export goods. The pharmaceutical industry saw £13.9 billion GVA (gross value added) as a result of air freight services, with £8.3 billion for the computer, electronic and optical industry, and £5.3 billion for creative arts and entertainment.
The Aviation Strategy
Speaking of the importance of the air freight industry, chief executive of Airlines UK, Tim Alderslade, discussed how the upcoming Aviation Strategy, must emphasise the role of air freight, and how it can be supported going forwarded, in order for it to thrive.
The Aviation Strategy, details of which were unveiled earlier this week, aims to develop the aviation sector in the long term for both businesses and individuals alike. One of the main outcomes that those within the industry are hoping for with regards to this strategy, is the recognition that restrictions on night flights for the air freight sector is hindering growth within the industry, leaving businesses unable to meet the ever-growing expectations of consumers.
As a business with a vast amount of experience within the air freight industry, we hope to see further support from the government to ensure that our sector continues to thrive and contribute to the UK economy.
